Emotional Foundations Of Psychiatric Disorders

Before discussing neuropeptide drug discovery initiatives, we will briefly summarize the two intellectual trends that are now opening up new vistas in medicinal developments for the regulation of discrete emotional problems. The first is the approach known as affective neuroscience, which aspires to conceptualize the evolved emotional operating systems of the mammalian brain (Panksepp, 1998a). The second is social neuroscience, which recognizes the importance of evolved social-emotional circuitries in generating affective experiences (also see Chapter 20). Both are yielding new evolutionary vistas for a psychiatry that is based on a scientific understanding, in equal measure, of the emotional aspects of mind, brain, and behavior.
