Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors

The incidence of CNS effects with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors is similar to that of beta blockers. The precise role of ACE in the CNS is not well defined. Mild lethargy, sedation, and fatigue are the most common complaints. y As opposed to beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors appear to have the lowest association with depression and, therefore, are the drugs of choice when depression is a risk.

Approximately 2 to 4 percent (depending on renal function and dose) of 100 patients on captopril develop diminution or loss of taste perception. This sign is reversible and usually resolves within 2 to 3 months, even with continued drug administration.
