Associated Medical Findings

Skeletal abnormalities like kyphoscoliosis and pes cavus, as well as diabetes and cardiac symptoms, are associated with Friedreich's ataxia. Cold intolerance, dry skin, and hair loss indicate hypothyroidism. Pulmonary and gynecological examination might show signs of bronchial or ovarian carcinoma, respectively. Cervical adenopathy might reveal Hodgkin's disease. Subacute, reversible ataxia associated with pyrexia suggests viral cerebellitis. Repeated bronchopulmonary infections suggest ataxia-telangiectasia. Examination of the cardiovascular system might disclose a structural cardiac lesion or rhythm disturbances, which indicate a possible cardiac cause of emboli.
