There are a considerable number of specific theories that have been developed to account for specific emotional disorders, many of which will be described in the appropriate chapters in the second part of this book. There are, however, one or two theories or proposals that have more general implications for theories of emotion, but which do not fit neatly under the headings that we have considered so far in this chapter. One such proposal is that of 'emotional processing' (Rachman, 1980, 2001) and various cognate ideas that have implications not only for specific emotional disorders, but also for normal emotional experience.
