Although much of your recovery has probably been supported by therapists, doctors, and other in-person individuals, sometimes you might want to gather information on your own or talk to someone anonymously. That's when a computer with Internet access can be an ally. There are a variety of online websites that function like virtual reference librarians. Some are maintained by organizations dedicated to education about and prevention of eating disorders. Here is a partial list:

These sites are among the most respected in the eating disorders field, and the information they contain can be relied upon to be accurate and ethical. But you must use Internet resources intelligently. If you question the truthfulness of something you read elsewhere, check several sources to see if their information is basically the same. Be alert to discrepancies and discuss them with your primary support people.
Online chatrooms, bulletin boards, and email can also be useful additions to your recovery strategies and function a lot like cheerleaders and "reality checkers." Since most schools and public libraries have computer terminals and since there are many free email sites, anyone with access to a computer can utilize these resources.
