Calcitonin is secreted by the parafollicular C cells located in the lateral lobes of the thyroid. This hormone is a 32-amino acid polypeptide with an NH-terminal 7-member disulfide ring.47 Calcitonin acts to lower serum calcium concentration, principally by inhibition of bone resorption. Secretion of the hormone is increased in the presence of elevated levels of serum calcium.
