Complications

As discussed earlier, transient elevations in serum glucose may be observed postoperatively but are rare beyond several weeks when tumors are enucleated. Diabetes increases with the extent of the pancreatic resection. Persistent hypoglycemia is currently less than 5% in cases of benign insulinoma.48 Hypoglycemia is common, however, in cases of malignant insulinoma when not all tumor can be resected. Other postoperative complications include hemorrhage, abscess, pancreatitis, and pancreatic duct or biliary fistulas.49
