Historical Background

The term Hürthle cell tumor is a misnomer. In 1894, Hürthle described intrafollicular cells of the thyroid in a normal dog that actually were parafollicular C cells.3 True Hürthle cells were first described in 1898 in a patient with thyrotoxicosis by Askanazy.4 In 1907, Langhans reported the first Hürthle cell tumor, and Ewing, in 1919, described a true Hürthle cell tumor and miscredited Hürthle as the original discoverer.5 Therefore, these tumors are occasionally referred to as Askanazy cell tumors or Langhans tumors:; however, they are most commonly referred to as Hürthle cell neoplasms.
