Cosleeping of infants with other family members can be hazardous and can increase the risk of infant death (AAP, 2000a). Specifically, the risk of SIDS associated with cosleep-ing is significantly increased when the caregiver is a smoker (AAP, 2000a). Parents should be encouraged to move the bassinette or crib into their room to have the infant close by, but should be strongly discouraged from having the infant sleep in the same bed. Also, adults who smoke or use sedating substances (alcohol or other drugs) should not share a bed with an infant.
