Behavioral Approaches

Behaviorally based approaches have been found to improve the results of weight loss programs. In general, the longer the program, the longer the weight loss is maintained. A variety of approaches have been used, without a clear advantage to a specific modality, including self-monitoring with diet and activity records or rewarding specific behaviors such as exercise or diet changes. Identifying and avoiding environmental or social triggers for excessive eating can also help. Group support may be helpful for some people. Because emotions often play a role in eating, stress and depression should be addressed before undertaking weight loss or as part of a behavioral weight loss program.
