Breast Mass

In a patient who presents with a breast mass, a careful clinical and family history with focused physical examination, a mammogram or ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration of the mass is termed a triple test. Most primary care physicians can perform the triple test with radiologic assistance for the evaluation of a breast mass. A positive triple test (indeterminate, suspicious, or malignant) was found in 99.6% of breast cancers. On the other hand, if all three test components are negative and the patient is deemed low risk by personal or family history, the patient requires no further workup and has a less than 1% risk of cancer (National Breast Cancer Centre, 2006).
