Chorionic Villus Sampling

In CVS, another technique for obtaining fetal tissue for genetic evaluation, the chorionic villi, or placental cells, are aspirated. With ultrasound guidance, CVS can be performed at 10 to 13 menstrual weeks transabdominally with a spinal needle or transvaginally with a catheter designed and approved for this purpose. Chromosomal analysis of the vil-lous cells can be completed in 7 days. Thus the advantage to CVS is the early gestational time of the procedure and availability of the results. The procedure-related fetal loss rate is approximately 1 in 125 tests (Jackson et al., 1992).
