When a brief intervention is not effective, or if the circumstances demand more expeditious change, a classic intervention can be planned. The interventional goal is to break through the alcoholic denial system by providing an overwhelming amount of evidence and feedback to the alcoholic patient. Classic interventions need to be carefully orchestrated by professionals trained in chemical dependency treatment. Unless actively involved in alcoholism treatment, most family physicians will consult one of their referral treatment programs for assistance in developing a classic intervention. The family physician may be an appropriate member of the intervention group.
