Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens alter mood and perception. Commonly abused hallucinogens include LSD, PCP, MDMA, and hallucinogenic mushrooms. In 2008, there were 1.1 million current users of hallucinogens in the United States; use increased among youths 12 to 17 years old. Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is sold as tablets, capsules, or liquids. It is often added to absorbent paper and dosed in small, decorated squares. Users of LSD experience unpredictable sensations of sound, color, hallucinations, and delusions. Long-term consequences of LSD usage include flashbacks, depression, and long-lasting psychosis. Users of phencyclidine (PCP) may smoke, ingest, inject, or snort it to experience hallucinations. PCP use may cause violent behavior, anxiety, and paranoia.
