Interventions for Specific Personality Disorders

To utilize specific interventions for each subtype of personality disorders is the art of medicine. A basic specific approach is outlined for each disorder in Tables 46-1 and 46-2. This schema includes choosing the correct DSM-IV-TR cluster; identifying the specific personality diagnosis; understanding the patient's core beliefs, irrational thoughts, specific fears, main defense mechanisms, and coping style; and recognizing common physician reactions to each personality disorder. Using this knowledge, interventions are then tailored for each disorder (see Table 46-2). This conceptual framework allows the formulation of helpful interventions for the primary care management of specific personality disorders.
