Key Points

A comprehensive evaluation of a crisis, trauma, or disaster includes assessment of the following:

• The normal equilibrium state

• The precipitant stressor or trauma

• The personal interpretation or meaning of the events

• The crisis state

• Preexisting personality or psychiatric conditions

• Selective past history

• System of social supports

• Effects on local society or community resources

• Special considerations for IPV (see later Key Points for IPV Approach).

Figure 45-1 presents an overview of a modern crisis intervention theory that is useful for the treatment of a crisis, IPV, or trauma.
