Key Treatment

Selenium sulfide 2.5% lotion (or shampoo) daily for 1 week is effective treatment of tinea versicolor (Sanchez and Torres, 1984) (SOR: B). Ketoconazole 2% shampoo (Nizoral) may be applied daily for 3 days to treat tinea versicolor (Lange et al., 1998) (SOR: B). Oral fluconazole or ketoconazole (400 mg) also treats tinea versicolor (Bhogal et al., 2001) (SOR: B).

Oral itraconazole (200 mg bid 1 day a month) is effective prophylactic treatment for tinea versicolor (Faergemann et al., 2002) (SOR: B).
