Shampoos containing ketoconazole, selenium sulfide or zinc pyrithione are effective for moderate to severe seborrhea capitis (Danby et al., 1993; Pierard-Franchimont, 2002) (SOR: A). Ketoconazole 2% cream, gel, or emulsion is safe and effective for facial seborrheic dermatitis (Chosidow et al., 2003; Pierard et al., 1991) (SOR: B).

Oral terbinafine, 250 mg daily for 4 weeks, is effective for moderate to severe seborrhea (Scaparro, 2001; Vena et al., 2005) (SOR: A). Hydrocortisone 1% cream or lotion can be used twice daily on face, scalp, or other affected area (Firooz et al., 2006) SOR: B). Desonide 0.05% lotion is safe and effective for short-term treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the face (Freeman, 2002) (SOR: B). For moderate to severe seborrhea on the scalp, 0.05% fluocinonide solution once daily is affordably priced and beneficial (SOR: C).
