Key Treatment

Adults and children 8 years and older should be treated with oral doxycycline for 21 days for early Lyme disease (Worsmer et el., 2006) (SOR: A).

Pregnant women and children younger than 8 years should be treated with oral amoxicillin or cefuroxime (SOR: C). Patients with neurologic (excluding isolated facial nerve palsy) or cardiac manifestation are treated with IV antibiotic therapy for Lyme disease (Wormser et al., 2000) (SOR: B).

typical prophylactic therapy is with long-acting IM ben-zathine penicillin G every 4 weeks until early adulthood (about 18 years of age).
