Treatment for ectopic pregnancy can be medical or surgical. Methotrexate, a folate antagonist, is often used in the medical management of ectopic gestation. It inhibits the rapidly growing trophoblast cells of the early placenta. Several treatment protocols are accepted (Buster and Pisarska, 1999). Most side effects seen with low-dose methotrexate therapy are mild and transient. Resolution of the ectopic state has been reported in about 70% to 95% of cases treated, depending somewhat on selection criteria.

The surgical approaches for ectopic pregnancy include lap-aroscopy for both confirmation and treatment and occasionally, laparotomy. The procedure of choice is salpingostomy, reserving salpingectomy for women not wanting future fertility.
