Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

First described in 1965, NPH is characterized by gait disturbance (magnetic gait), urinary incontinence, and dementia. This triad does not offer help with diagnosis, because the findings are common in other dementias as well. Frequently, this is first suspected when prominent ventriculomegaly is noted on neuroimaging (Hunter-Smith et al., 2007). There is no effective pharmacotherapy, but some cases respond to ventricular shunting. Selection of patients likely to respond to shunting is difficult, and referral to a center with considerable experience is advised if surgical treatment is being considered.
