Quit Lines

One of the least used methods, yet one of the most effective, is telephone quit lines. Surveys have shown that 70% to 85% of smokers prefer to use a quit line to seeing a clinician, perhaps because of the convenience, anonymity, and ability to obtain counseling in their native language. The toll-free number, 1-800-QUITN0W (1-800-784-8669), is a single access point to the National Network of Tobacco Cessation Quit Lines. Callers are automatically routed to a state-run quit line, if one exists in their area. If there is no state-run line, callers are routed to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) quit line, where they may receive cessation services and other information. Quit lines are available in almost every state (Schroeder, 2005). There is also a California Smoker's Helpline at 1-800662-8887, which links people nationwide to counselors who will give one-to-one support. Quit lines are even more effective when combined with NRT (Bush et al., 2008)
