Safety at Home Sleep Position

Since the implementation of the AAP's Back to Sleep program, the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) has decreased by 40% (AAP, 2000a). Infants should be put to sleep on the back, on a firm mattress, in a crib without any soft or compressible structures (stuffed toys, crib bumpers, bedding) within the sleeping space to help prevent accidental suffocation, which is one cause of SIDS. Sleeping on quilts, comforters, waterbeds, sheepskin, pillows, or any other compressible surfaces increases the risk for SIDS.
