Currently, diagnosis of Parkinson's disease does not relegate a patient to pharmacologic treatment. Drug therapy should be initiated when the symptoms are significant enough to cause functional impairment (Rao et al., 2006). Current therapies do not appear to slow the progression of the disease and no studies have clearly demonstrated a best initial treatment for this condition (Schreck et al., 2003). Table 42-17 summarizes the pharmacologic agents available to treat Parkinson's disease.
