Urinary Frequency

As a complaint, urinary frequency implies a deviation from a patient's normal urination pattern. Thus, it may either be truly abnormal or simply more than the patient's custom (but still normal). It may exist alone or in concert with other symptoms. For example, UTI often causes urinary frequency, urgency, and dysuria.

Adults typically urinate five to six times a day (Gerber and Brendler, 2007). Frequency usually represents an increased number of episodes with small volumes of urine as opposed to increased urine volumes, such as in polyuria. These factors help narrow the differential diagnosis (Box 40-2).
