Vibroacoustic Stimulation

Vibroacoustic stimulation is an artificial burst of noise produced by a handheld battery-powered artificial larynx (Birnholz and Benacerraf, 1983). This device is portable and easy to apply to the maternal abdomen and provides a stimulation that combines both sound and vibration. The goal is to alter the fetal behavioral state, waken a sleeping fetus, and provoke accelerations in the heart rate. Use of this device is associated with a significant increase in the number of reactive NSTs and a significant decrease in overall testing time. The use of vibroacoustic stimulation in achieving fetal heart rate accelerations has been found to be equally predictive of a favorable fetal outcome as spontaneously generated fetal heart rate accelerations (Smith et al., 1986).
