One of the manifestations of ROS-induced damage is a decrease in sperm motility. This is due to ROS causing lipid peroxidation of the sperm plasma membrane. In turn, lipid peroxidation damages the sperm axonemal structure leading to decline in sperm motility. In support, leukocytes which generate ROS had a negative correlation with sperm motility [107]. Evidence shows that deregulated apoptosis may also play a role in the decline of sperm motility. Apoptosis-like manifestations in the form of increase levels of caspases were shown in ejaculated spermatozoa in athe-nozoospermic semen sample [108].
