Targeting the microenvironment may represent a promising therapeutic approach for prostatic diseases. In the clinical practice, patients with chronic inflammatory aspects in the prostate gland could be stratified at higher risk of BPH progression or, in particular if associated focal atrophy, at higher risk of carcinogenic development. In both cases, the finding of chronic inflammation in the prostate may indicate the need of a preventive strategy.
