Introduction

Laparoscopic nephrectomy for benign disease is now a simple procedure but may prove to be very challenging, depending on the indication for surgery.

Although most cases of benign disease can be managed by simple nephrectomy, inflammation or previous surgery, especially in the obese patient, may obliterate normal dissection planes, and radical ablative surgery in these circumstances may be more judicious. This chapter describes the technique of laparoscopic simple nephrectomy for benign disease in detail, including a number of practical tips designed to facilitate the procedure, based on the authors' experience of over 500 procedures.
