Introduction

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the neurones in the autonomic nervous system and the mechanisms that enable them to carry messages throughout the body. It will concentrate on the peripheral neurones, since these are easier to study, although it must be remembered that neurones in the central nervous system play a major role in the integration of sensory signals and the activation of the motor neurones in the autonomic nervous system. We will look at the passive and active properties of neurones.
