Antihistaminic Agents

Hydroxyzine is an antihistaminic agent with proven analgesic properties at high dosages. It does not consistently improve analgesia obtained with opioids, but it does potentiate the effect of opioids on the affective components of pain. It appears that hy-droxyzine administered intramuscularly has analgesic properties similar to those of low dosages of morphine (Beaver and Feise 1976). In addition, the sedative and antipruritic properties of this drug are useful in the setting of chronic cancer pain. Hy-droxyzine similarly may have an application in the augmentation of opioids in sickle cell crises.
