Assessment of Level of Care

During the assessment process, the consultant needs to determine the appropriate level or intensity of care, which may include routine outpatient care, intensive outpatient care, day treatment, partial hospitalization, residential treatment, inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, and/or medical hospital-ization. Although evidence about the effectiveness of inpatient and residential care is limited, existing studies have failed to demonstrate long-term bene fits despite the increased intensity of treatment and costs (Crisp et al. 1991; Gowers et al. 2007). Nonetheless, patients who are physically and emotionally unstable generally require intensive psychiatric intervention for stabilization. Suggested criteria for medical and psychiatric hospitalizations are listed in Table 10-5.
