Epidemiology

Due to the paucity of data in pediatric SLE, there is little known about the epidemiology, long-term out come, and optimal treatment of this disease during childhood (Ardoin and Schanberg 2005). It has been estimated that SLE affects 5,000-10,000 children in the United States, with the prevalence being even higher for African American individuals (Kone-Paut et al. 2007). Approximately 80% of children with lupus are female. The disorder most frequently appears and is diagnosed during adolescence. Most children and adolescents with SLE now survive well into adulthood, where management has focused on prevention of the long-term complications associated with SLE (Ardoin and Schanberg 2005).
