Pharmacological Interventions

Pharmacological interventions often used in the treatment and prevention of pain in SCD include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, oral narcotics, and parenteral opioids. These medications are typically provided in combination with hydration, reduced physical exertion, and treatment of underlying hypoxia or infections (A. Platt et al. 2002). These treatments can be used quite effectively to treat SCD pain in some cases, although SCD pain is often persistent and sometimes undertreated in health care settings (Claster and Vichinsky 2003; A. Platt et al. 2002).
