Treatment Adherence

The posttransplant treatment regimen is complex and often includes lifelong immunosuppression, dietary modifications, frequent clinic visits, and numerous blood tests. Decreased adherence to such complex medical treatment has been identified as one of the leading risk factors for acute and chronic graft rejection episodes in pediatric renal transplant recipients (Shaw et al. 2003). A study exploring barriers to medication adherence among adolescent renal transplant candidates demonstrated that enhanced knowledge of medication regimen, implementation of a medication organizational system, and parental supervision of administration were factors associated with increased likelihood for adherence in this patient population (Zelikovsky et al. 2008). These studies underscore the importance of evaluating the patient's family environment and knowledge of treatment as potentially modifiable predictors for future adherence.
