Introduction

Squamous cell carcinoma of the penis is a rare disease in developed countries. Based on epidemiological data from the comprehensive cancer centers in the Netherlands, the age-adjusted incidence of penile cancer is estimated to be 1.5/100,000. Despite the fact that this disease is readily visible and easily accessible for both diagnostic and surgical interventions patients still present with advanced disease. Fear and embarrassment are considered the most significant reasons for the delay in seeking treatment.1,2

Due to the rarity of penile carcinoma, the literature on the value of chemothera-peutic and radiotherapeutic treatment is fragmented and the optimal chemotherapy and radiotherapy regimen is yet to be determined as studies are generally limited to small single-institution retrospective studies. In the first part of this chapter we discuss the role of these interventions in the treatment of locally advanced disease, metastatic disease, and also in the postoperative setting. The second part is focused on the role of radiotherapy in the treatment of penile cancer, and the last part is dedicated to the role of chemoradiotherapy.
