Allorecognition

oe Recognition of the antigens displayed by the transplanted organ (alloanti-gens) is the prime event that initiates the immune response against the allograft. There are currently two accepted pathways for T-cell allorecognition, direct and indirect pathways:

• Direct pathway: donor APCs migrate out of the allograft into the recipient's lymph nodes and present donor MHC molecules to the TCR of the recipient's T cells.

• Indirect pathway: recipient APCs migrate into the graft and phagocytize alloanti-gens. The donor MHC molecules are then expressed on the cell surface of the recipient's APCs and presented to recipient T cells in the lymph nodes.
