Chemoprevention refers to the use of prophylactic medications to prevent the development of cancer. Many studies of potential chemopreventatives, including nonster-

oidal anti-inflammatory drugs, retinoids, inhaled glucocorticoids, vitamin E, selenium, and green tea extracts, have been conducted, but none has been successful. Large randomized clinical trials have evaluated P-carotene and vitamin E as lung cancer che-mopreventative agents in high-risk patients (older smokers). Although vitamin E has no influence on lung cancer, the trials show that older people who smoke have a higher risk of developing and dying of lung cancer if they take a P-carotene supplement. Nonsmokers do not appear to have an altered risk of lung cancer with P-carotene consumption.11
