Epidemiology and etiology

The incidence of chemotherapy or radiation-induced mucositis depends mostly on the type and area of radiation, the type of chemotherapy, and the specific cancer. Studies have reported an incidence of about 80% in head and neck cancer patients receiving chemoradiation.12 The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 75% of patients who are treated with high-dose chemotherapy for stem cell transplantation developed oral mucositis.10 Specific chemotherapy agents associated with mucositis include taxanes, anthracyclines, platinum analogues, methotrexate, and the fluoropyrimidines.
