23 MDD. The average age at onset is the mid-twenties. Interestingly, MDD appears to occur earlier in life in people born in more recent decades. Most patients with

MDD also suffer from comorbid psychiatric disorders, especially anxiety disorders and substance-use disorders.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the leading cause of disability (based on years lived with disability) and the fourth leading contributor to the global burden of disease (based on disability adjusted life years).4
