For most conditions associated with primary or secondary amenorrhea, estrogen treatment (along with a progestin to minimize the risk of endometrial hyperplasia) is utilized. The purpose of estrogen therapy in this patient population is twofold: To reduce the risk of osteoporosis and to improve quality of life. ,10 Table 49—2 identifies a variety of therapeutic options for amenorrhea, including recommended doses. Figure 49—3 illustrates a treatment algorithm for the management of amenorrhea.
