^^ Acne is categorized as mild, moderate, or severe based on the lesion type and lesion severity (see Table 65-1). Successful treatment approaches are developed based on these categories, as well as any previous treatment information presented by the patient. Improvement of symptoms following treatment occurs gradually, sometimes taking 6 to 8 weeks for results to be physically apparent. 8 Patients need to be educated on continual treatment compliance during this time and not get discouraged if acne lesions appear to worsen before getting better during the initial 2 to 3 weeks of therapy.11
