Follow-up should include patient education, counseling, and repeated inspections of the ulceration to ensure healing. Examine patients 3 to 7 days after commencing with treatment. If improvement is not evident, consider the following: (a) the diagnosis is incorrect; (b) the patient is coinfected with another STI; (c) the patient is infected with HIV; (d) the patient was noncompliant; or (e) the H. ducreyi strain may be resistant to therapy.
