Prevention

© Chemotherapy extravasation may be avoided in many cases by the use of successful prevention strategies. The most important preventative measure is proper patient education. Patients must be instructed to promptly report any local symptoms not only during administration, but days to weeks later. Another key factor is the exclusive use of highly trained personnel who are trained to administer chemotherapeutic drugs. The Oncology Nursing Society has developed guidelines for the administration of vesicant drugs as summarized in Table 99-18. 9 Although placement of a central venous catheter is recommended, extravasations may still occur due to dislodged or poorly placed needles or nicked catheters.
