An anterior approach is most commonly utilized for treatment of infections involving the disc and vertebral bodies and for drainage of paravertebral abscesses. The disc space is the most common location for pyogenic infection. As the disc space becomes infected and purulent material enters the anterior epidural space, anterior neural compression develops. An anterior epidural abscess may occur. A paravertebral abscess may develop as infection spreads along the anterior or anterolateral aspect of the spinal column.
