What are the advantages of using an anterior cervical plate after anterior discectomy and fusion

Anterior cervical plate stabilization prevents graft collapse, maintains alignment (prevents local kyphosis), decreases postoperative brace requirements, and usually allows earlier return to activities such as work or driving. When fusion is performed at more than one level, fusion success and clinical outcome are improved with the use of an anterior cervical plate (Fig. 46-2).
