When is pharmacologic treatment advised for patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis

Current indications for pharmacologic treatment in the United States include:

• Postmenopausal females or males age 50 or greater with a T-score of -2.5 or lower at the hip or spine or patients in this age range with a prior hip or spine fracture

• Patients with osteopenia (T-score -1 to -2.5) and a 10-year probability of hip fracture 3% or greater or a 10-year probability of any major osteoporosis-related fracture 20% or greater (fracture probabilities are determined by FRAX®).
