Conclusions

Overuse injuries are multifactorial and preventable. Proper attention to antagonist muscle groups, stretching, correct form, and avoidance of excessive play and training all lower the risk of developing overuse. A careful and coordinated team approach by the athlete, trainer, coach, and physician will ensure timely recognition, diagnosis, and recovery from such an injury. Proper treatment requires assessment of the athlete's entire training and playing regimen with elucidation of the etiologic factors of overuse. Only after recognition and modification of these factors can further injury be prevented.
