These injuries are assumed to be stable, and treatment is generally weight bearing as tolerated with or without a high pneumatic brace. For more severe stable injuries, a period of non-weight bearing up to 4 weeks may be employed. Counseling the patient and coach is very important because these injuries have been shown to take an average of 43 days of recovery time.11 This is almost double the recovery time of lateral ankle sprains. Reinjury is common, and return too early can result in a prolonged course. Eighty-six percent of these athletes can be expected to have a good to excellent result, but one third will have mild stiffness and one fourth will have mild activity-related pain.15 A custom brace to limit rotation can be helpful on return to sports.
